Interview with professional fashion photographer Lance Lee
John Lance, you look like someone who embodies the model of success in this new world of photography that is emerging. You're open to new business models, research in its market focus, and both collaboration and innovation in the way they have structured their business. With Photos Offstone you label as team leader and seems to have incorporated an element of education as well. Your photo is also varied ranging from fashion and advertising business, portraits, lifestyle, products, documents and material, even.
Lance: Before starting Listing
(1) I see myself as a builder and a master of one – photography.
I like learning new things and I'm happy that contribute to my growth as a
photographer. For example, learning hairdressing and makeup help for my
to fashion. Even learning the dances as Salsa and Tango has forced me to be more sensitive
body language to which I am more surprised to models guide
poses.
(2) I have the intention of launch a photo agency and library material focused on images of Asia
Most of them reside in my plans for becoming a platform for asiaphoto photography Asia, and photos are heart of its activities. As such, I am reducing the importance of Offstone tried to reduce the workstation.
(3) I believe in teamwork and group work, as opposed to current practice
Photographers who work alone. Much of this came from my experience in photography fashion and film production work. In fashion, you have a lot in the head of a team of stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, and assistants to create good shots. In the work of the film is all clear from the director of the lighting must be associated in a good movie. I think the future of stock photography is in good teamwork.
Juan: Do you take every genre, or is part of the collaboration of Offstone?
Lance: Except for documentary and portrait, Most of what you see in offstone.com are the result of team work.
My area expertise is fashion. To create the brilliant images of the photographer requires strong support diverse talents, including models, makeup artists, hairdressers, designers fashion, art directors, assistants and digital imaging artists. If any of those players that the team is not working well, the image of fashion is flawed in several ways. Photographer must be the team leader to bring all these talents to work in harmony and chemistry to generate creativity.
In projects somehow, I'll let another photographer operating the camera while playing the role of artistic director. Generally, the photographer a student or an assistant he taught me. Incidentally, I believe in learning by teaching. When I guide my photography as an art director, I realize that I can learn new things to see the creativity. Sometimes I wonder how my students to compose a shot or the light of a different set of what I have done. This interaction is very rewarding for the student and teacher.
Sometimes I will also act as a hairdresser or a makeup artist. I just finished a six-month diploma in professional hair and makeup.
I play different roles in the style of the team. The paper does not deal with modeling. I'm not photogenic enough for the camera photo. LOL.
Without But I like to direct my models posing and expressions.
I'm always eager for new knowledge, but out of the picture. In general, contribute back to my work photo in any way.
John: In both cases, what he likes to shoot more?
Lance: Professionally speaking, I love the beauty of shooting spreads more.
The thrill of diving the same model in turn is different is beyond words. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the model is pleasantly surprised by the way can be beautiful … with the right makeup, hair and photo processing.
Personally I love to shoot documentaries. The photo project was a transsexual part of my life, photo, personal and emotionally.
John: Can you share with us how you got into photography?
Lance: This has started 12 years ago when I was 21. I was in the military and I was playing my tour of duty in Taiwan. Only with a lot of time to kill photography as a hobby to document my experience away from home (Singapore). Upon entering the university the same year found a holiday job as an intern for The Straits Times, oldest newspaper and the leader of Singapore.
I became a young reporter for the newspaper the rest of my life in college. This was the beginning Photo of my career and life changing experience.
If it were not for the experience filming of "The Straits Times, which does not become a professional photographer.
John: How did you Offstone be?
Lance: "OFFSTONE" was the term used in British newspapers to define times a day for all news and images to be finished and ready to print. In The Straits Times, where I had my first experience working in professional photography, I drove my professional life to days when offstone meeting (When I took pictures ready for the story)
When I got to ride my own studio, I decided to call Offstone Photos homage to my beginnings as a photojournalist.
John: How important role does your company stock?
Outbreak: Currently, the scope of work contributes less than 5% of our monthly income, but must be 30% of our time at work. We intend to increase our production time for stock photography, than 75% of our total working hours. We are eager to do what we can see that the work of shares gives us more creative freedom than most of our stations. Once you reach this stage, we are happy to divert our work most boring, but the allocation of bread with butter and focus on the real challenges and inspiring.
John: Are you selling through multiple agencies and, if so, who is your bag?
Shoots: Right now, we sell our microstock not exclusively with the usual suspects, ie, iStockphoto, Shutterstock, Stockxpert, Dreamstime, Fotolia, etc. We are providing royalty-free images at Alamy.
As for rights-managed images, we are trying to decide whether we should establish our own agency asiaphoto.com focus on images rather than Asia.
John: Do you sell your shares now?
Outbreak: Currently, we sell our rights-managed images to our customers who have experienced through an assignment.
John: You seem to have thought much of the population of Micro. How the three models, RM, RF Micro play on your own strategy?
Outbreak: I attach great importance in editing photos and categorize them. In my opinion, not all images are created equal. Similarly, there are various levels of experience, expertise and aesthetic values of the photographers on my computer.
To train our photographers Junior, who attribute them to take photos microstock going for quantity and quality. This allows them to have more and experience. The answer from the beginning helps to understand microstock sales market more quickly – knowing what sells and what does not work. In my opinion, microstock buds are ideal training grounds for those who just joined us.
Before microstock, we must take risks to upset customers, magazine publishers, in particular, when we push our young people to make payments assignments. With microstock, the worst that can happen is a waste of time and resources to produce images when they are issued or sold. In the allocation of workers, customers dissatisfied is losing sales channels and opportunities to take in the future.
For photographers highest on our team, myself included, who prefer to focus to shoot for working with rights-managed. But we who are involved in production microstock to guide our youth in their leaves, as well as a way of understanding market demands better.
John: If you take the three models can be drawn differently for each and how?
Lance: Beyond the allocation of projects to get the microstock juniors and seniors to discuss the work of RM also classified according to their production costs.
That our young people to adopt less-experienced models on white background, obviously, less expensive and these images are generally classified deals for microstock. We insist on the quantities and variations in such projects.
As more experienced models study in stylish settings and fixed costs are higher than with makeup, hair and a more sophisticated production. These images are intended for your general rights-managed presentation. The emphasis is on quality over quantity.
Juan: heard some people postulate that the Reserve Micro model is not viable, with the entry of a veteran producer at large scale, there will be an excess of images that will be able to make enough money to cover their costs. What are your thoughts on the long-term viability of model values microphone?
Lance: Microstock is here to stay and continue to grow more. It will be a natural progression where photographers must learn to work together. Teamwork is necessary for them to reduce production costs an even greater workload without compromising quality.
Watch the film industry. Established a system where roles to work together to make a movie. I think the population will benefit photographers, taking a similar approach. Delegating work production for producers, casting directors, artists, digital images and a management team for key text, loading and marketing, Photographers can concentrate on what they do best – creating images for the kick-ass hardware.
However, this does not necessary work for implement the law. Photographers who prefer to work alone may be more appropriate for this work because it puts more focus on skills MRI of an individual.
John: Do you think people all shooters must "soak your toes" in the waters of Micro stock?
Lance: I have a good knowledge of the industry Stock Photography rights-managed two agencies worked RM after my journalism degree Photo and before going to the fashion and advertising. RM I will always be important, especially for buyers looking for exclusivity and elite photographers reward picture for their work.
To establish the rights of photographers managed if you are flourishing in this area, just concentrate on the work of the RM. I am the RM great photographers continue to do well, regardless the size of the microstock segment topics.
However, for most photographers who are its revenue by microstock MR will be interesting to learn more about microstock phenomenon.
It will not hurt at all a hundred separate images their pictures to see how they fare in the microstock segment. The worst that can happen is to lose a fraction of the potential gains, but the increase is to learn from their sales (or lack thereof)
For professional photographers and industry input stock photography Microstock provides a faster learning curve.
You can take and load on Mondays, Wednesdays, get approval and get your first download for Thursday if you submit to Shutterstock. microstock sites, iStockphoto and others may take longer than a week to get approval and one or two weeks to see downloads in the first place. For rights-managed images, will months before seeing results. This faster learning curve can be very helpful to new participants and reduce their cost of learning the ropes of this industry.
Juan: What role the Internet plays in your business?
Lance: If it were not for Internet, I can not be half as successful and busy with my career. About half of our workstations lines of our Web presence. With photography, the actions to be our main key to success.
In addition to sales and increased income, Internet usage has also reduced our production costs lot of work. In other words, helps to increase profit margins.
For example, we have new models frequently writes and volunteers of our actions, as outbreaks are impressed by our portfolio. For work microstock, we are fortunate that we have never had to pay for the models with little or no experience.
On the other hand, when pay for professional models in terms of rights-managed our sessions, we can reduce costs, since there is no shortage of offers for modeling.
John: The collaboration between photographers have always been the exception not the rule. It seems that you are promoting collaboration … Can you tell us a bit about it?
Shoots: Photographers tend to be highly independent individuals creative. Therefore prefer to work alone and have a lonely job. You're right about collaborations are the exceptions in history. Rare as they are, these exceptions has been lead to progress we have We should all be grateful. As ownership of the photographers copyright, which has been developed by Magnum photographers.
A large part of my preference for teamwork comes from my experience in film production. Often used as a camera and film director of photography independent music videos and television. In film production, teamwork and collaboration are very important and I'm always fascinated by the result of team creativity and problem-solving. Often the hope wear the same kind of energy to the picture.
For projects of our picture, I encourage our photographers and the production team working as if working on a film. The process is very similar – translated creative storytelling pictures.
John: You propose an education at a personal photographs. How long have you done this?
Lance: This is the series of lectures where I give one to one coaching for photographers who are clear in their objectives and want to push their limits.
I did this for the past five years.
I always enjoyed teaching. Early in my career, I was hired by Fujifilm for photography classes in Singapore. They often traveled to Asia for workshops and seminars. Among the many photographers in the group classes, some think they know more and more quickly if you could have private meetings with me. They tend to have very specific goals, which require special care and assistance. This is how the class one-on-one approach teacher come.
Juan: What was your experience?
Outbreak: Personally, master class series is a valuable experience for both my students and me. Very often I find myself energized by their passion and dynamism. Sometimes I learn new concepts and ideas of my students, especially those who research additional addresses that I gave them specific. I must emphasize that learning is traffic in both directions.
Most of my students in the final Master Class Series as valuable members of our team working on collaborative projects. That's certainly better than the independent contracting are not familiar with management essential functions.
John: I see that you have at least one sample of a digitally manipulated image on your site too. Do you plan to make a greater percentage of digital manipulation work in the future?
Lanza: The digital image has always been a great part of our workflow, mainly because most of our work was the assignment of jobs in fashion. Usually spend more time on image in the shooting digital. Each image of fashion stockings an hour of digital images. However, we can not afford this luxury for stock photography, especially in microstock.
In other words, do not expect a higher percentage in the future digital work. But you never know with certainty. Things could change.
Juan: In fact, we can!
